On August 27, 2017, AlFalastenieh TV broadcast a program on PMED’s Comprehensive School-Based Student Support Program. Ms. Sherein Abdeen (PMED Program Director) and Mr. Mohammad Hawash (General Director of the Counseling and Special Education Unit within the Ministry of Education and Higher Education) discussed a recent training led by Ms. Abdeen.
In this training, 60 principals, guidance counselors, and teachers from Ministry Schools received an overview of normal child development, emotional and behavioral disorders, and comprehensive approaches to support students experiencing these disorders within the school setting. Following this initial training, Ms. Abdeen will implement the program in five Ministry Schools in East Jerusalem through the formation of a permanent Student Support Committee and training for parents at each school. The program is implemented in partnership with the World Health Organization.
During the interview, Mr. Hawash highlighted the need experienced by schools and students in Jerusalem due to the difficult political situation. He shared his hope that the program will be implemented in all of the Ministry of Education school in Jerusalem and throughout the West Bank in the coming years. Trainees shared that this training was highly practical, giving them skills to better work with students and facilitating a higher level of empathy for students with special needs.
